The initial search is done on all fields of the database. If you use the buttom 'Valid names' the list will look much better, you have then removed all records which are presently invalid names, basonyms or synonyms. Unfortunately we have in the past not duplicated the records of emended descriptions. We lump in valid and invalid names as well as provisional working designations.  We have used the database for our reporting during 19 years without systematic updating.  Please notice the link to the NCBI Taxonomy Browser.  Example 1: Actinomyces AND dog or canine Example 2: equi* or horse (sorry you can't use the 'Valid name buttom') Some genera have all species loaded in the database.
