For the identification, the CCUG uses phenotyping with classical in-house or commercial tests, cellular fatty acid analysis (CFA-FAME), GLC (anaerobes) and sequencing of the 16S rDNA gene and housekeeping genes. Since we have huge databases and our own softwares: strain matching, match, cluster analysis for numerical analysis, we have an exceptionally powerfull identification service. We have defined over 100 novel taxa and published numerous novel species in collaboration with international reseach groups specialized in 16S rRNA sequencing and molecular characterization. Without phenotypic data it is usually impossible to formally describe new species. Therefore one should NOT abandon the phenotyping for solely modern DNA technics. PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing are of course the methods of choice for slow growing or inert microorganisms like Mycobacterium, Bartonella, Mycoplasma, etc.
